I’m an avid indoor & outdoor gardener and seedstarter.
I really regret buying this lighting system. It is flimsy, required serious adjustment to get it to fit together, and difficult to raise & lower the light. Overall, extremely poor quality.
I only used it for 1 season and then bit the bullet and bought a more sturdy system with 3 bulbs instead of just 2.
Don’t waste your money on this.

Just received and assembled this product today. I’m not sure why others have posted about poor quality and flimsy construction of this product. I am very satisfied with the construction and sturdiness. This product is exactly what I expected for the price, product description, and pictures.
I did notice that there are 3 very similar hydrofarm 4 foot grow systems listed on amazon, with a $15 price-range difference. This is the most expensive of the three. The only difference I can tell from the written description is that this product is described as having a premium light fixture. The pictures look the same. One of the other 4 foot hydrofarm systems received a few positive reviews.
Assembly required a philips head screwdriver, pair of pliers, and about 5 minutes of my time. One screw is used to connect each of the two vertical supports to the base cross-bars. Due to the shape and construction of the parts, this fit is tight and secure. Then each of the vertical side bars slips into the top piece (metal button is pressed and then releases into a hole on the top piece). Then you attach the light fixture itself, by hooking nylon string with s hooks attached to the top to either end of the light fixture. Pliers are used to close s hooks. The light is raised and lowered with the nylon string, very similar to a heavy venetian blind. It would be nice if the nylon string were a tad thicker, but it is sufficient for the job.
Overall, I am very happy with this product and would recommend it.

The primary problem is that the unit is flimsy. It leans in one direction or another, and is not stable. The string used to adjust the lamp reminds me of having those frustrating window shades that never work right. If I had it to do over again, I would get the cheaper flourescent lamp with metal chains for adjustment.

I was a little afraid to order this because of previous reviews, but found this item to be perfect for what I wanted to use it for. Set up is easy, fast and works just great. Maybe not the most high quality product for the price, but other ones out there are much more expensive and are basically the same. This is just a simple way to get light to your seedlings for a couple months before planting outside. The light raises and lowers just as advertised. Works Great. Would buy it again.

I just received the JSV2 today, and haven’t put it together yet – but I am confident that it is a good product. Here’s the thing: the product description on Amazon is totally wrong, according to the manufacturer. The JSV2 now has only one light, instead of the two mentioned in the description, so don’t be surprised (like I was!) when the system arrives and looks different than expected. According to Hydrofarm, the older JSV2 had two T-12 bulbs, but they redesigned the product and it now comes with one T-5 bulb, which is apparently a much better bulb.

This item does indeed work, however, the light does not go up and down as they say. It actually uses S-hooks, which were supplied with this unit, so they must be aware of it on some level. The feature that it is supposed to have – whereby you can move the light up and down by a pulley-type mechanism – does not function. Hence, the S-hooks. I was very disappointed by this (I hate S-hooks), but the light itself functions well, and the frame is okay.

This package is a great value. Everything works as it should. The hood is a bit cheap and gets very hot, but for this price…very much worth the trade-off. Make sure that you peal the blue plastic off from under the hood.

I’m basically saying what everyone else has said already, but the more feedback the better. The product came as advertised and seems to be working great. Both the 400W HPS and 400W MH bulbs are insanely bright and haven’t given me any issues turning on or off. I have my ballast plugged into a surge protector which is plugged into a timer, and it powers up every time without a problem.
Instructions to set this up are completely non-existent… but it’s simple to figure out. The reflector pulley’s that came with my kit seem to be malfunctioning or just low-quality. Every time I would try to lower the reflector, it would pull right back up (not sure if anyone else had this problem), no matter how much I messed with the wing nuts on the side of the pulleys it would never stop the reflector from pulling back up. I solved this by purchasing some alligator clips and just clipping them onto the string to stop it from retracting. Easy.
The ballast does run a little hot, but it’s designed to be a silent heatsink. I just put a small fan behind it to blow some air over the top and it seems to be working well.
All-in-all I am very happy with my purchase. I would highly recommend it to anyone, but don’t be surprised when you don’t find any instructions!

I am satisfied with the product; however, instructions were more or less terrible, and the MH bulb arrived broken. Refund option is available, but it’s the HPS bulb I need at the moment, and I don’t have time to wait for another to arrive. Who can say if this happened from poor packaging or rough transit? Ballast, light, and bulb as expected: cheap yet suitably effective. Ballast runs very hot. Directions recommend running in a room 0 to 50 degrees, so to follow directions it would be necessary to be in a very cool living situation or have a separate method to cool room in isolation from others.
