Black & Decker LE750 Edge Hog 2-1/4 HP Electric Landscape Edger
Outdoor Power Tools – Features
You’ll get great results with this Black & Decker heavy-duty Edge Hog landscape edger, one of the easiest-to-use pieces of equipment we’ve come across. You’ll be thrilled with how quickly you can get to work, as assembly takes only a few minutes. This is an electric model, so you’ll need an extension cord and an electric outlet handy, but you won’t have to deal with gas or oil. And it’s so quiet you can edge at any time of day–even early Saturday mornings–without worrying about waking up the neighbors.

We found the Edge Hog has plenty of power in its 2-1/4-horsepower motor for both edging and trenching, and it’s easy to switch from one to the other by simply raising or lowering the edge guide. The edger weighs only 12 pounds, which allows for easy transportation and great maneuverability around curved paths, but makes it more difficult to maintain a straight line when you’re tackling a lawn that hasn’t been edged in a while. If you’re digging out quite a bit of dirt along with the edge you’re creating, it takes some effort to keep the unit stable.

Undoing a screw toward the front of the edger and raising or lowering its leading wheel easily adjusts the depth of the edge groove you’re making along with your edge. The unit can also be adjusted to fit the height of the user more comfortably by changing the angle on the guide handle. The blade requires only a pull of the trigger to start instantly and, unlike many gas models, stops as soon as the trigger is released—an important safety feature.
Can help transform your yard and increase curb appeal
11 Amp, 2-1/4 HP motor supplies 150 in./lbs. of torque
Three-position blade depth adjustment ensures optimum control
Dimensions: 30 x 10 x 12.5 inches (WxHxD); weighs 12.4 pounds; 2-year warranty

Outdoor Power Tools – Reviews

The B&D Edge Hog is a fine product. My results with it have been excellent.

Overall, the price, was attractive. The other option I considered was a gas edger. They are more priceyfrom Sears. Even more options are using a shovel or a hand edger wheel, or not doing any edging at all. The shovel is not such a bad option for someone who has plenty of time and muscle, but either does not want to buy an edger, or does not like technology.

The included instructions were sub-standard. They do not give any useful information, and include no photographs. I would call them "Don’t jump into a pool with the edger running" instructions.

Despite the poor instructions, I found the device itself powerful, and easy to use. The drop-down guide was very helpful in following the sidewalk and curb of my suberban home. I found that the suggested setting of one inch was not good, as the turf itself was thicker than that, above the sidewalk, where it had overgrown for many years. Using one of the deeper settings was better, in that the guide was able to contact the edge of the sidewalk at this setting. One of the few suggestions in the instructions was to start the motor, then set it into the work. This made no sense, as was not practical. The best way to get started is to use a shovel to find the true edge of the sidewalk, and edge about six inches by hand. Then, using this area to get the guide started, follow along the edge of the sidewalk. After you have gone about one hundred feet, you get the hang of it. You want to keep pressure against the guide so that the unit sparks just a little on the first pass. Otherwise, it may wander off the line. Once you have made the first cut of the season, it is then much easier to edge.

After you have cut your line, you will need the shovel to clean up, as there will be effectively sod which you have cut. It may be three or six inches wide, and you could consider transplanting it to a bare spot. After you remove the "sod," you would normally use a blower or pushbroom to clean up what’s left. Then, you could consider a pressure washing of the sidewalk, as there will be dirt under the sod on the concrete. Myself, I used a $5 sweeper nozzle, which was highly effective.

After finishing the job, I checked my work against my neighbor’s, who had purchased a Sears gas edger the same day. I thought the B&D cut a closer line. I don’t think the Sears has a guide at all. He said there wasn’t one, and I didn’t see one. He doesn’t like dealing with a cord, and has gas blower and string trimmer, too. Myself, I find the B&D much less expensive, easier to start, smaller and lighter to store, and with less risk from the toxic, highly flammable fuel at my home. This experience was somewhat colored by the burn I got on my hand when I borrowed my neighbors gas roto-tiller and leaned my palm on the hot muffler.

The whole yard has a much better look. The place looked so neat after I edged it, that my neighbor came over and used his yard blower to clean up some grass I’d left on the sidewalk using my string trimmer, to help retain the look. That’s how neat the finish is on the lawn. Yes, I’ve discovered that it is entirely possible to spend the entire weekend mowing the lawn.

Bob Richards

After fighting for several hours to edge my neglected sidewalks and driveway with a manual edger I finally gave in and bought the Edge Hog from B&D. What a pleasure it was! There was virtually no setup required and within minutes I was walking along cutting a perfect groove along my sidewalk, driveway, and even the curb. The only problem I did encounter was when I got into the thicker growth (2-3") and the Edge Hog would clog. But it was really my fault. After several days of rain the ground was still quite damp and I was eager to use my new toy instead of waiting for the ground to dry (going against the recommendations in the User’s Manual). By clogging I mean it would no longer kick out the grass and dirt it was cutting into. The blade would still spin but I would get build-up in the protective shield around it. Cleaning it out was a piece of cake. For being electric it had plenty of power and I could move along quite quickly in the drier areas. Relatively quiet as well. Overall I am very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone. And judging from the curious looks by the neighbors, I’m sure I’ll get the chance.

Catherine W. Muscar

This is the first edger I’ve ever owned, but it seems to work very well. There is a metal guide that makes it very easy to make a perfectly straight cut along your driveway or sidewalk. I think this feature makes it superior to using a string trimmer turned on its side (it’s hard to make an exact and clean cut with a string trimmer). It’s got plenty of power for my yard, and it edges about as fast as you can walk.

Outdoor Power Tools – Reviews

Pros:

The unit is lightweight and easy to move. It has a variety of included attachments to tackle almost all jobs around the home. One nice feature is the adjustable spray tip on the wide-angle wand. The unit has a lot of power for an electrical pressure washer — more than enough to clean driveways, decks, grills, mowers, etc.

Cons:

As mentioned in many other reviews, the plastic hose adapter leaks water, right in the middle where the two washers meet. The leaking is so bad as to make the unit unusable, unless you enjoy being sprayed with a torrent of water while you work. The solution: go down to your local hardware store and buy a brass male-to-male hose adapter for 8 bucks. Now you are in business.

The high-pressure hose that runs from the unit to the spray-gun is made from a stiff plastic that tangles easily and is hard to manage as you move around. I am currently researching buying an after-market hose made from high quality rubber to avoid this problem.

Also, don’t bother storing the hose using the built-in reel. It is fussy work trying to get the hose on and off, and bending the hose in tight circles makes it that much easier to tangle when you use it. Simply coil the hose loosely and drop it around the top of the handle. This will save you lots of time.

Final thoughts: This unit provides a good value among other electric pressure washers, if you don’t mind upgrading the hose adapter and dealing with a slightly annoying hose.

Curly Top

I did a lot of research on electric power washers and this brand seemed to have really good professional reviews. I chose this particular model because of the long power cord and the long high pressure hose. As extra bonuses you also get 1900 pounds of pressure and everything wraps up nice and neat on the unit. My only concern is the plastic connection for the hose. I wish they would have used brass or steel like what they have on the high pressure connection. I’ve tested the unit for about three hours. I washed a couple of windows; did a great job. I cleaned my tiled patio; got the dirt out of the grout. I cleaned my car; got most of the dirt, but even a 3000 psi unit can’t get it all, it’s just a basic fact you have to use some elbow grease to get road scum off. I also tried it on my fence to clean off dirt and moss build up; didn’t do such a good job but then again it is a 1900psi unit and for wood you really need at least 2600psi. For that you need a gas unit and I really don’t want to deal with the mess, the loud noise, and the maintenance. I’m really happy with this unit so far, I just hope it doesn’t break after a couple of uses like I heard from reviewers of other brands.

I purchased the AR383 from a local retailer for $120. I have used the pressure washer for a few hours and here are my observations:

I find the shut-off feature to be really nice. When you release the trigger handle on the wand and stop washing, the motor shuts off. No worries about burning up the pump. The pressure available is what I expected: not nearly what a gasoline powered washer will do, but fine for an electric. Serious power washing will require a gasoline powered pump, but for small, short duration jobs, like blasting a lawn mower, vehicle, or small deck, it’s really fine. And using an electric pw is light, quick and mess-free. Haul it out, hook it up, do the deed, and then put it away.

I am also pleased that the hookups for water input and pump output are metal. Aluminum I believe. Some consumer grade washers have plastic fittings at these locations and are very fragile. The wand and rotary tip supplied work great. And now for the nits to pick:

In general, a wand tip that offers “adjustable” spray pattern is a compromise. Fine for some, but nonadjustable tips that offer different spray patterns work much better. A significant criticism is the placement and specification of the pump output. The high pressure output is located in an area that is difficult to access for threading on the high pressure hose. It can be done, but I think it is too fiddly, and too easy to damage the threads in the soft aluminum. To make life easier, I thought I would purchase some quick connect fittings to modify the pump output and the hose input. Well…AR has chosen to use a 15mm pump/hose size, so none of the more common (in the USA) 14mm fittings will work. Naturally, if you are not bothered by no quick connect capability, this point is moot.

To be fair, I emailed the USA technical dept at AR asking about a quick connect adapter. Very quickly and politely I was informed that there was no provision for quick connect adapters but that my concern would be relayed to the engineers in Italy. Other technical info that I requested was offered as well. As far as quick and thorough answers to my questions, highest compliments to AR customer service!

At this point, as is my way, I stepped out of the normal consumer universe and decided to design and fabricate a device so that I could use the available quick connect adapters with my new AR383. A couple of dollars worth of brass tubing and a few minutes work at the metal lathe, and voila, I can now use the available quick connect fittings for the pressure hose hook up. Makes the pressure hose hook up much faster and less fiddly. I also use a quick connect fitting on the garden hose input. No special engineering needed for that, just visit your local home center for the adapters.

Given the limitations of a consumer grade electric power washer, I really like the AR383. Much better that the two previous yellow washers. Way less trouble than using a gasoline powered washer. And with my qc mod, I can use all my other hoses and wands.

Black & Decker ST1000 9-Inch 1.8 amp Electric Grass Trimmer
Outdoor Power Tools – Features
If you’re in the market for a basic, entry-level electric trimmer to handle light trimming work around your house, the Black and Decker 9-inch grass trimmer might be worth considering. While certainly not as powerful or feature-laden as more costly models, this trimmer can handle much of the light-duty work many homeowners need. The trimmer weighs just 3.2 pounds and requires little assembly with just 2 steps. It operates off a reliable, 1.8-amp HP motor, which spins the line at 11,000 rpm. This grass trimmer features a basic bump feed line system, a generous nine-inch cutting path, and a secondary assist handle for added comfort and control. It comes with 20 feet of .065-diameter line, and spool replacement is fairly simple. One thing I found especially handy with this particular trimmer was its unique cord lock system, which holds the extension cord firmly in place while the trimmer is in use. As someone who has accidentally unplugged a trimmer halfway through a job on more than one occasion, this indeed a handy feature to have. This product is backed by a 2-year full warranty. –Carl Thress
Ideal for smaller yards or light-duty trimming jobs
1.8 Amp motor operates at 11,000 RPM.
Bump feed spool allows feeding of the line as needed
Dimensions: 17.8 x 7.8 x 7.2 inches (WxHxD); weighs 3.2 pounds; 2-year warranty

With a $25 gift certificate I got this for less than $10. It was well worth it. I am trying my best to get rid of needless gas motors because two ATVs, a lawn tractor and a mower is more than enough to maintain. I also wanted something that was very light so my wife could use it.

I have 3/4 of an acre of lawn and don’t mind using cords to get where I need to. This little trimmer does everything it should. I easily trim around my raised garden beds and this unit is very good for precise trimming around flower beds, etc. The line feed is very easy to use.

I had no issues with shipping, the unit worked and still does. The best part is the local Home Depot had spare line reels for it. Try that with my old Home Lite gas trimmer. It was impossible to find parts.

I’m very happy with this purchase.

bljjc

(Note: the trimmer is actually black in color)

For a small trimmer, it does the job better than expected. I have a lot of yard to trim and was able to easily trim the edges of the entire perimeter and nearly trimmed the entire lawn too, it now looks like I recently mowed.

Lightweight and easy to handle.

*Get a long sturdy cord to use (it’s not included) and make sure to loop it through the hole in the end – which the instructions mention – so your cord doesn’t pop out. **This is NOT a rechargeable, cordless trimmer.

For the low price, it’s a great deal, particularly if you have smaller yard and don’t want a big gas trimmer. It’s cheap enough to be disposable!

Michelle E. Little

This trimmer is a step down from the last electric weed whacker I used. It can get the job done, but it doesn’t do it as quickly – I find that I have to be much more careful in my technique, or the string will simply brush over grass blades and weeds without cutting them. My other beef is that there isn’t a sufficient guard on the back side to keep my feet and legs from getting sprayed with clippings. I have to remember to change into old clothes before using this.

That said, when I bought this, I figured that for the price it didn’t have to be that good to be worth it, and from that standpoint, I’d say it met expectations. If you need to do a lot of trimming, go for something better. But if you just need a trimmer occasionally, this should do the job just fine.

Outdoor Power Tools – Reviews

We live in So. California with lots of cement decks and brick hardscape in both front and back. We also have a fairly large pool with many bougainvillea plants constantly in bloom.

Having used both a gas powered blower (too strong an airstream) and an electric in the past and not wanting to take a chance on dragging the electric cord thru the pool, we really wanted something that could pinpoint the stream a little better so as not to blow half the dust and leaves back in the water. The Black and Decker Cordless Broom fits the job perfectly.

Every morning about 8:am (the cordless blower is relatively quiet) I go out for my routine yard maintenance and in ten minutes the job is done and I then switch batteries from the charger so that the next day, it’s ready for duty.

Bottom line, it’s simply a wonderful little machine.

C. Plummer

I just bought the B&D NS118 blower along with the NST2018 cordless string trimmer. I have a corner lot with long parkways and a lot of sidewalk footage, and have grown tired of dealing with up to 175 feet of extension cables for my corded trimmer and blower. I’ve had a nice battery-powered mower for several years, and felt it was time to go all cordless. This new pair of tools seemed promising, particularly because of the removable battery design.

After only one use I can say I’m reasonably satisfied, but not fully sold.

Handling: This is probably one of the lightest blowers available and is easy to handle. But the way the nozzle attaches is not good at all. It’s difficult to remove, and the design invites finger accidents.

Power: The blower is nowhere near as powerful as my corded one. B&D refers to this as a "broom" and that’s an appropriate description. It works well on surfaces where you might otherwise use a push broom. It’s not good at getting leaves out of grass or flowerbeds. But in a way, the lower airflow can be better for sweeping than a corded blower. My corded one, even at its low setting, can often send debris flying all over the place. This one calmly moves stuff where you want it to go.

Battery: The batteries are compact. The blower comes with two of them, and I needed them both to complete one job. I guess I’m okay with this approach. It makes sense to lug around only as much weight as is necessary rather than carry a much heavier battery the whole time. If you buy this along with a trimmer as I did, you’ll have four batteries and two chargers available for swapping. And if you happen to have a FireStorm 18v drill, you can apparently swap batteries with that system as well.

Quality: Build quality seems similar to most B&D stuff, meaning it will probably work for a few years.

Overall: Going cordless does simplify my work and save me time, but this tool isn’t appropriate for all cleanup jobs. I have a month to make up my mind about keeping it. But even if it passes muster, I suspect I’ll want to hang onto my corded blower for the occasional heavy job.

Katherine

This is a wonderful tool! I live in an oak forest & have two decks, two flights of stairs and a big concrete patio which runs the length of the house (with a screen porch) & a smaller brick lower patio. Spring time means pollen and tree blooms, and Fall means leaves and acorns. Two batteries with this blower gets the whole job done with juice to spare. Total time to do all areas is about 15 minutes or less.

As a petite female I hate dragging out the big blower and cord (it hurts my back and arms) — so I leave that one to my husband. This one I can get out and blow the upper deck (and yellow pollen) off in less than 5 minutes. The noise level is great and the power output is just right to blow stuff off the deck and patio. When I want to do the whole job — I just put the extra battery in my pocket and head out. I also use it to sweep out my garage. You can sweep without moving your cars — since it can blow underneath them. I keep my charged battery in the blower and the second on the charger. When I finish the small jobs, I just swap batteries and never have to worry about them not being charged.

I am purchasing my second unit — just so I can take it to my lake house to “blow off” my two golden retrievers before they come in the house. YES — they actually enjoy being blown and you can just see the dust fly off their long coats. Just don’t blow it in their faces. I have them jump up on a park bench, do one side, have them turn and do the other — Then it is good bye pollen, leaves, & dirt and they are clean enough to come in the house.

& FYI — I still on occasion let my husband drag out the noisy, heavy electric blower — which does a better job. But for me the little cordless is perfect for the in-between times and is the perfect size and weight for me!

Outdoor Power Tools – Reviews

I bought this tool for the convenience of battery operation. The Worx surely has this convenience in spades; and its telescoping and multiple handle and trim head positioning features worked flawlessly. I expected it would not be as powerful a large gas model, but to be suitable for my grassy driveway cut. Since it is advertised as an edger as well as a trimmer, I expected it to handle grass trimming easily. Its power however is miniscule. It chokes down in grass much thinner than in most lawns. The line invariably binds in the spool negating its design to auto feed the line as needed. One actually must shut off, turn the unit upsidedown and remove the very small spool to unbind the line and feed it manually. Most of the parts of the business end of the unit are of light plastic and give no confidence on wear life. This unit is suitable for only the lightest and thinnest grasses, and not for edging at all except perhaps for the airiest sandy soil (which my Carolina clay is not). I have an orange garage decoration, and the job of finding a good small gas powered unit.

This line trimmer has some very nice features. It also has some weaknesses.

Strengths:

- electric cordelss (a requirement for me)= no mess/fuss & low noise

- lightweight

- adjustable trim head is very handy – I’ve never seen this on a line trimmer before. I like it a lot.

- durable – seems like a solid design.

- easily swapped batteries. Inexpensive battery replacement.

Weaknesses:

- not as powerful as their ads led me to belive. I’ve used a Craftsman 10 in. Electric Weedwacker for the past two years which uses a powerful 24 volt battery system. This trimmer uses an 18 volt. I’m not sure if that’s what makes the Craftsman more powerful but something does. The Worx does fine with grass, but I don’t think it would work well with anything heavier…

- so so as an edger. Not really powerful enough to dig the edge – but it will trim it and the wheels actually make it work fairly well for this.

- advertise how great the auto feed system is. Mine often required me to take off the bottom and manually feed it. The spool did seem to be poorly rolled so maybe I had a non-typical problem. Seems like it worked ok when the line didn’ get caught up inside. Since they boast it as a selling feature, I’m guessing my problems with it were unique to me…

I order the WORX GT after seeing the infomercial a multitude of times,Finally I ordered one and gave up on all of my trimming for a month.By the way the neighbors loved me for this,to see what kind of abuse this machine would take. When it finally arrived and I opened the box and minor assembly was required but simple for anyone you Need one Phillipp’s screwdriver for one screw. Also a DVD if you didn’t understand the instructions.I was impressed oh god forgive me for saying this but the quality of the plastic. It was actually heaver then I expected,Especially the battery. After an hour on the charger off we went.I was very impressed It took down weeds that where 6inches high and 1/4 inch thick.I was pretty certain I would wreck the machine and be getting a refund. That was kinda the plan. The edger although awkward to position this machine into the edger it works well as both and they where even smart enough to put guidelines on the safety guard.Overall good tool but I don’t think I’ll sell my gas trimmer anytime soon.

Pros:

Two tools in one $100 only gets you an edger some places

Light weight and extremely portable

Decent battery time about 20-25 minutes

Auto feeding Head

Edger leaves lawn looking neat and clean

Three spools of line included

One hour charger

Fold away spacer

Cons:

Changing positions and from trimmer to edger I fell are award and a little clumsy

Free Replacement”For Life” line is 9.99 For two or three spools No thanks I’ll buy bulk line and wind the spools myself

Little too short me I believe and I’m 6’2″

Can’t wash with hose or pressure washer

I Wish it was A 20 or 24 Volt for a little more run time

Edger wheels need to be 1/4-1/2 inch larger for smoother movement through situations such as broomed concrete
