This is a handy device for controlling power to something in response to heat sensed from its tethered sensor, and its easy to use. You can control many things by plugging them into a power strip plugged into this controller, up to something like 500 watts. Presently, I just have it controlling a small 17 watt heat mat as my garage gets too cold at night for some of my seedlings, but its nice to know I can add other things.

I did some accuracy tests of this digital thermostat with my heat mat by placing the thermostat’s heat sensor with that of a digital thermometer and found them to agree within a degree or two Fahrenheit. You can put the sensor probe inside the soil if you want to control root temperature, or positioned in the air if air temperature is your concern, but never into water or other liquids.

If you have problems with your heat mat warming up and suspect this controller, you can plug a power strip into this controller and your heat mat into the power strip along with a small test lamp to see that power really does turn on when it is supposed to.

I really like this interesting and very useful device and am happy that I bought it, though I would be happier if it were made in the good `ol USA instead of abroad.

Works like a charm.

Connect the Heat Mat monitor’s power cord into the wall, then connect the seedling heat mat into the monitor.

To set the degrees is very easy. Hold down the button “SET” until the numbers are blinking. Then using the up and down arrows, set the desired temperature.

There is a little wire with a plastic white tip that hangs from the monitor.

Push the white part into the soil for temperature reading.(Once temperature is set, do not be alarmed when your heat mat reaches its maximum temperature you set it to then the Heat Mat monitor temperature will go up and down 3 degrees to prevent over heating)

This is very helpful for starting seeds.

B. Hooper

This was just what I needed to keep my seed soil at a proper warmth to promote growth. When used in conhuction of a seedling heating pad, it makes growing from seeds a snap. It was easily set-up and easy to adjust as I added different types of seeds. It kept the seeding tray at a constant 81-86 degrees until my peppers had sprouted. Later it kept it at around 75 degrees. The click it makes when coming on and turning off is quiet and no disturbing to the conversation.

I bought this kit because of the price was about $40 and there was no shipping charge. Now I am just using the heat mat and tray to coax fig cuttings to root. Late winter I will reinsert the planting cell tray and the clear lid to germinate other small cuttings and garden vegetables. The station and mat are standard size and weight. The mat provides good even heat and seems tough enough to last a long time.

While I’ve started seeds indoors before, this was my first year with something like the germination station, and I must say so far I’m impressed. Within three days, my sunflower seeds were starting, and within 5-7 days multiple varieties of tomatoes were poking their heads out.

I had about 50% germination using this item. And that was with good quality seeds. You really have to watch closely as mold grows quickly with all that moisture.

I’m an avid indoor & outdoor gardener and seedstarter.

I really regret buying this lighting system. It is flimsy, required serious adjustment to get it to fit together, and difficult to raise & lower the light. Overall, extremely poor quality.

I only used it for 1 season and then bit the bullet and bought a more sturdy system with 3 bulbs instead of just 2.

Don’t waste your money on this.

Just received and assembled this product today. I’m not sure why others have posted about poor quality and flimsy construction of this product. I am very satisfied with the construction and sturdiness. This product is exactly what I expected for the price, product description, and pictures.

I did notice that there are 3 very similar hydrofarm 4 foot grow systems listed on amazon, with a $15 price-range difference. This is the most expensive of the three. The only difference I can tell from the written description is that this product is described as having a premium light fixture. The pictures look the same. One of the other 4 foot hydrofarm systems received a few positive reviews.

Assembly required a philips head screwdriver, pair of pliers, and about 5 minutes of my time. One screw is used to connect each of the two vertical supports to the base cross-bars. Due to the shape and construction of the parts, this fit is tight and secure. Then each of the vertical side bars slips into the top piece (metal button is pressed and then releases into a hole on the top piece). Then you attach the light fixture itself, by hooking nylon string with s hooks attached to the top to either end of the light fixture. Pliers are used to close s hooks. The light is raised and lowered with the nylon string, very similar to a heavy venetian blind. It would be nice if the nylon string were a tad thicker, but it is sufficient for the job.

Overall, I am very happy with this product and would recommend it.

The primary problem is that the unit is flimsy. It leans in one direction or another, and is not stable. The string used to adjust the lamp reminds me of having those frustrating window shades that never work right. If I had it to do over again, I would get the cheaper flourescent lamp with metal chains for adjustment.

I bought this heat mat to get my seeds started inside. Since my apartment is cold and seeds like heat I thought i’d give it a try. Three days after I planted my seeds I had a ton of sprouts. Nearly every seed germinated. If you need some extra warmth to get your seeds going definitly get one of these heat mats.

It didn’t get too hot and I was able to keep it right on my countertop. My only problem was I should have had a light to put over my seedlings once they sprouted. It’s very easy to use as you just plug it in and put your tray on top. The instructions are even written right on the mat itself.

This mat does the job! If you have a couple of seed flats to warm, this mat will suffice. On the other hand, if you, like me, really enjoy starting plants from seeds, you may want a larger size mat (or more than one of this size). In any case, this one does exactly what it is supposed to do: it gently (and reliably) warms seed flats until the seeds sprout.

The first time I have tried using a heat mat. I placed the mat on a sheet of 3/4″ styrofoam insulation and set my covered seed trays on top. I planted presoaked seeds of tomato and pepper. In two days I had sprouts. This was in a cool (50 degree)greenhouse. The temp inside the seed trays was 80-85 degrees.
