Black & Decker ST1000 9-Inch 1.8 amp Electric Grass Trimmer
String Trimmers – Features
If you’re in the market for a basic, entry-level electric trimmer to handle light trimming work around your house, the Black and Decker 9-inch grass trimmer might be worth considering. While certainly not as powerful or feature-laden as more costly models, this trimmer can handle much of the light-duty work many homeowners need. The trimmer weighs just 3.2 pounds and requires little assembly with just 2 steps. It operates off a reliable, 1.8-amp HP motor, which spins the line at 11,000 rpm. This grass trimmer features a basic bump feed line system, a generous nine-inch cutting path, and a secondary assist handle for added comfort and control. It comes with 20 feet of .065-diameter line, and spool replacement is fairly simple. One thing I found especially handy with this particular trimmer was its unique cord lock system, which holds the extension cord firmly in place while the trimmer is in use. As someone who has accidentally unplugged a trimmer halfway through a job on more than one occasion, this indeed a handy feature to have. This product is backed by a 2-year full warranty. –Carl Thress
Ideal for smaller yards or light-duty trimming jobs
1.8 Amp motor operates at 11,000 RPM.
Bump feed spool allows feeding of the line as needed
Dimensions: 17.8 x 7.8 x 7.2 inches (WxHxD); weighs 3.2 pounds; 2-year warranty

With a $25 gift certificate I got this for less than $10. It was well worth it. I am trying my best to get rid of needless gas motors because two ATVs, a lawn tractor and a mower is more than enough to maintain. I also wanted something that was very light so my wife could use it.
I have 3/4 of an acre of lawn and don’t mind using cords to get where I need to. This little trimmer does everything it should. I easily trim around my raised garden beds and this unit is very good for precise trimming around flower beds, etc. The line feed is very easy to use.
I had no issues with shipping, the unit worked and still does. The best part is the local Home Depot had spare line reels for it. Try that with my old Home Lite gas trimmer. It was impossible to find parts.
I’m very happy with this purchase.

(Note: the trimmer is actually black in color)
For a small trimmer, it does the job better than expected. I have a lot of yard to trim and was able to easily trim the edges of the entire perimeter and nearly trimmed the entire lawn too, it now looks like I recently mowed.
Lightweight and easy to handle.
*Get a long sturdy cord to use (it’s not included) and make sure to loop it through the hole in the end – which the instructions mention – so your cord doesn’t pop out. **This is NOT a rechargeable, cordless trimmer.
For the low price, it’s a great deal, particularly if you have smaller yard and don’t want a big gas trimmer. It’s cheap enough to be disposable!

This trimmer is a step down from the last electric weed whacker I used. It can get the job done, but it doesn’t do it as quickly – I find that I have to be much more careful in my technique, or the string will simply brush over grass blades and weeds without cutting them. My other beef is that there isn’t a sufficient guard on the back side to keep my feet and legs from getting sprayed with clippings. I have to remember to change into old clothes before using this.
That said, when I bought this, I figured that for the price it didn’t have to be that good to be worth it, and from that standpoint, I’d say it met expectations. If you need to do a lot of trimming, go for something better. But if you just need a trimmer occasionally, this should do the job just fine.

String Trimmers – Reviews
I bought this tool for the convenience of battery operation. The Worx surely has this convenience in spades; and its telescoping and multiple handle and trim head positioning features worked flawlessly. I expected it would not be as powerful a large gas model, but to be suitable for my grassy driveway cut. Since it is advertised as an edger as well as a trimmer, I expected it to handle grass trimming easily. Its power however is miniscule. It chokes down in grass much thinner than in most lawns. The line invariably binds in the spool negating its design to auto feed the line as needed. One actually must shut off, turn the unit upsidedown and remove the very small spool to unbind the line and feed it manually. Most of the parts of the business end of the unit are of light plastic and give no confidence on wear life. This unit is suitable for only the lightest and thinnest grasses, and not for edging at all except perhaps for the airiest sandy soil (which my Carolina clay is not). I have an orange garage decoration, and the job of finding a good small gas powered unit.

This line trimmer has some very nice features. It also has some weaknesses.
Strengths:
- electric cordelss (a requirement for me)= no mess/fuss & low noise
- lightweight
- adjustable trim head is very handy – I’ve never seen this on a line trimmer before. I like it a lot.
- durable – seems like a solid design.
- easily swapped batteries. Inexpensive battery replacement.
Weaknesses:
- not as powerful as their ads led me to belive. I’ve used a Craftsman 10 in. Electric Weedwacker for the past two years which uses a powerful 24 volt battery system. This trimmer uses an 18 volt. I’m not sure if that’s what makes the Craftsman more powerful but something does. The Worx does fine with grass, but I don’t think it would work well with anything heavier…
- so so as an edger. Not really powerful enough to dig the edge – but it will trim it and the wheels actually make it work fairly well for this.
- advertise how great the auto feed system is. Mine often required me to take off the bottom and manually feed it. The spool did seem to be poorly rolled so maybe I had a non-typical problem. Seems like it worked ok when the line didn’ get caught up inside. Since they boast it as a selling feature, I’m guessing my problems with it were unique to me…

I order the WORX GT after seeing the infomercial a multitude of times,Finally I ordered one and gave up on all of my trimming for a month.By the way the neighbors loved me for this,to see what kind of abuse this machine would take. When it finally arrived and I opened the box and minor assembly was required but simple for anyone you Need one Phillipp’s screwdriver for one screw. Also a DVD if you didn’t understand the instructions.I was impressed oh god forgive me for saying this but the quality of the plastic. It was actually heaver then I expected,Especially the battery. After an hour on the charger off we went.I was very impressed It took down weeds that where 6inches high and 1/4 inch thick.I was pretty certain I would wreck the machine and be getting a refund. That was kinda the plan. The edger although awkward to position this machine into the edger it works well as both and they where even smart enough to put guidelines on the safety guard.Overall good tool but I don’t think I’ll sell my gas trimmer anytime soon.
Pros:
Two tools in one $100 only gets you an edger some places
Light weight and extremely portable
Decent battery time about 20-25 minutes
Auto feeding Head
Edger leaves lawn looking neat and clean
Three spools of line included
One hour charger
Fold away spacer
Cons:
Changing positions and from trimmer to edger I fell are award and a little clumsy
Free Replacement”For Life” line is 9.99 For two or three spools No thanks I’ll buy bulk line and wind the spools myself
Little too short me I believe and I’m 6’2″
Can’t wash with hose or pressure washer
I Wish it was A 20 or 24 Volt for a little more run time
Edger wheels need to be 1/4-1/2 inch larger for smoother movement through situations such as broomed concrete

String Trimmers – Reviews
I just bought the B&D NST2018 trimmer along with the NS118 cordless blower. I have a corner lot with long parkways and a lot of sidewalk footage, and have grown tired of dealing with up to 175 feet of extension cables for my corded trimmer and blower. I’ve had a nice battery-powered mower for several years, and felt it was time to go all cordless. This new pair of tools seemed promising, particularly because of the removable battery design.
After only one use I can say I’m reasonably satisfied, but not fully sold.
Handling: This is probably one of the lightest cordless trimmers available and is easy to handle. The automatic feed system looks similar to the ones in other B&D models and seems to work properly. The shaft length is adjustable and the cutting head flips over for vertical edging.
Power: The trimmer is clearly not as powerful as my corded one. It deals with grass and light ground cover adequately, but has a hard time on anything with thick stems. Not recommended for whacking big stuff.
Battery: The batteries are compact. The trimmer comes with two of them, and I needed them both to complete one job. I guess I’m okay with this approach. It makes sense to lug around only as much weight as is necessary rather than carry a much heavier battery the whole time. If you buy this along with a blower as I did, you’ll have four batteries and two chargers available for swapping. And if you happen to have a FireStorm 18v drill, you can apparently swap batteries with that system as well.
Quality: Build quality seems similar to most B&D stuff, meaning it will probably work for a few years.
Overall: Going cordless does simplify my work and save me time, but this tool isn’t appropriate for all trimming jobs. I have a month to make up my mind about keeping it. But even if it passes muster, I suspect I’ll want to hang onto my corded trimmer for the occasional heavy job.

I got this trimmer to replace a 14″ corded Grasshog. Getting the cord out and dragging it around is a hassle. I had a cheap gas weedeater before and I could never get it to start, just ended up with a sore arm from pulling the cord. So I opted for this model. My first impression was that its wimpy. The string is almost too short. The battery drains quickly. It would be useless if 2 batteries were not included. But, it trims my 1/3 acre yard with hardly any juice left in the second battery. So, it does the job, but if you let your yard go for a few weeks plan on spending the weekend getting it back under control with the wimpy trimmer and anemic batteries. The auto feed, edger guide, and no cord are its best attibutes.
xsxx
I bought this trimmer because my old toro 7" 6 volt cordless trimmer finally died. This one has a ton more power, and the one I bought came with two batteries. The batteries are of the type that you can leave on the charger without damamging them, they are kept at full charge. I got about 30 minutes of continuous use out of the batter after its first 9 hour charge. Subsequent charges take 3 to 6 hours. The unit is also lighter in weight than several other models and the adjustable shaft is nice because my wife and I both use it and we differ in height by several inches so we can both use it compfortably.

I USED TO BUY THROW AWAY TRIMMERS EVERY FEW YEARS. THEY WERE LOUD, HARD TO START AND VIBRATED SIGNIFICANTLY. OUT OF THE BOX THIS TRIMMER STARTED IN TWO PULLS, ITS QUIET AND VERY SMOOTH, THE THROTTLE IS RESPONSIVE. YOU CAN FEEL THE QUALITY IN THIS MACHINE I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WAS MISSING. I HAVE A NUMBER OF HITACHI POWER TOOLS AND ALL HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT. THIS TRIMMER IS NO EXCEPTION. ALSO HITACHI OWNS TANAKA POWER TOOLS. TANAKA IS KNOWN FOR COMMERCIAL GRADE HIGH QUALITY. THIS TRIMMER IS THE SAME AS TANAKA TCG22EASSLP. LOOK AT THE FINE PRINT AT THE BOTTOM OF TANAKAS WEBSITE IT SAYS, HITACHI/KOKI.

I got this string trimmer to tackle a quarter-acre of weeds. I bought a house last Winter and the yard had not been cared for in over 2 years. The back is full of huge broad-leaf weeds with 2′ roots and garlic-mustard plants. I bought the Hitachi based on its reputation for durability compared to the chain-store brands like Poulan, Weed Eater, Craftsman, and Troy-bilt.
I’ve only had it for a month now, but it works great. This trimmer has no problem at all running for 90 minutes at a time and getting coated in weed juice. I definitely recommend wearing eye protection as this trimmer is easily powerful enough to fling chunks of weeds into your face. The .095 line is very durable and doesn’t break when it hits the occasional rock or tree.
The price may be high when you compare it to the cheaper entry-level models on Amazon, but with a 7-year warranty I think this trimmer will still be around when I finally whack my last 5-foot weed.
Busy Momma
On the side of the box of the Hitachi I found the word “professional”. “Yeah, right,” I thought. However, I have been through trimmer purgatory. My first attempt was an electric Black and Decker 36V beast. It trimmed for about 15 minutes and then checked out. Determined to get more power and reliability, I bought a Craftsman 4-stroke. Plenty of power, but so heavy my arm started hurting after 10 minutes. The Poulan and Husqvarna 2-strokes also failed to impress. Husqvarna still makes good high-end equipment, but the lower end model is nothing more than a more expensive Poulan. Furthermore, I don’t want my trimmer to be a blower, chainsaw, rototiller, or anything else. I want a good trimmer. Last, I tried a propane trimmer, and it was underpowered and kept dying on me.
This particular trimmer fit my budget at $[...]. I lucked out and bought it on sale, but it is worth the retail price (Hitachi is also giving a $[...] rebate right now, so my cost with tax was only $[...]. I love the one-piece shaft, as I have had other trimmers break at this point. It is incredibly lightweight, so I experienced no fatigue. It has power. Lots of power. My yard now has clean lines everywhere I look. I wish I had started with the Hitachi. I would have saved so much time and effort, but I can rest in knowing that the next 7 years (at least) will be trimming fun.
