Weeders – Reviews
I got one of these over a year ago. For the first 8 months, it was a joy to use. It is one of the easiest to handle weed pullers I’ve ever owned (I have at least 6 at any one time).
Well, it got a lot of use for the first 5 months. The last of those five months, I noticed that the ‘weed eject’ function wasn’t quite so smooth as before, and it took a light kick on the lever arm to release weeds. Still, it worked.
Winter came and went, and I’ve been plucking weeds like mad for the last month. Today, my Uproot weeder cracked at the base of the nylon surround for one of the 4 metal blades. It does not appear to be a repairable fault.
I don’t know if this is typical or not, but it’s increasingly hard to find these — and Fiskars has a new model out, with only one blade that seems to work fairly well (I have one of these also). It could be that they quietly dropped the model because of a breakage problem.

I never thought I’d pay $30 for a weed puller but, having tried a few cheaper types of weeding tools, I figured I had to do something. Frankly, I was so skeptical that I didn’t throw the box out or even remove the attached instruction card — so convinced was I that I would be returning it.
Well, I have been using it for the last couple of days and I am so pleased with it I’ve just ordered another one (so my spouse can get out there and pull those *$@#*(&@#_ weeds too!).
Okay, I can’t say that I had FUN exactly, but I have to admit I was almost happy to find another dandelion or thistle just for the sheer joy of pulling it up without the slightest effort. It successfully yanked up large-rooted weeds in my lawn area, in a bare soil area and in a section covered in wood chips (although the wood chips proved harder to remove from the tines).
You have to position the tool carefully over the center of the weed (although if don’t, it’s no big deal, you just give it another shot). And yes, it doesn’t pull up the entire tap root (you’d need three sticks of dynomite to do that) but it gets up enough of the root mass that it’s doubtful the darned thing will grow again.
I highly recommend this tool and I feel that, despite its high initial cost, it can definitely save money on less effective tools or — heaven forbid — chemical herbicides!

This is our second Fiskar 7870 Weeder. Every yard needs one.
We have tried other brands. This is the best. Hard to find the model 7870.
The new Fiskar Weeder has only 3 blades for weeds. Fiskar should stay with 4 blades, which the 7870 has.

Oswego GW-1 Grandpa’s Weeder
Weeders – Features
The Original, Effortless Weed Puller: Grandpa’s Weeder. Grandpa’s pride and joy was his weed puller! A simple lever (and a sore back) was his inspiration for inventing this tool in 1913. He wanted a way to pull out weeds quickly and easily without bending, kneeling, or pulling and by golly, this tool did the trick! Using this tool was so effortless he was often seen using it in his Sunday best!
Most effective, effortless weed puller since 1913

Weeders – Reviews
Oh the one I bought in 1952 is still in good working order, it’s just that I have to go and retrieve it from my neighbor every time I need to use it. This one I bought for my neighbor. This is truly a great weed puller and it still is of the same high quality materials and workmanship it has been over the years. The price of course has gone up since 1952, but it still is a good bang for the buck in 2009. I would highly recommend this item to anyone for its ease of use, and quality.

Being made of wood and iron, this thing looks like it could never break. Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving, as the iron lever that makes this weeder work broke off after only a few hundred small weeds were pulled. And my little wife used it exclusively, and she is far too physically weak to “abuse” it. It is also not a very effective weeder — very slow to use — so I prefer the “Yard Butler TT-1W Garden Terra Weeder” type (but one made of hard cast iron, instead of malleable stamped steel like the Yard Butler’s).

We just moved into a new house and the yard was sodded but contained a lot of weeds, mainly thistles and dandelions, which hadn’t been killed by the weed & feed fertilizer our lawn service used. I have a bad knee and getting down on my hands and knees to pull weeds was not something I wanted to do especially with thistles which can be a little rough on your hands. I looked in all the stores in the area for a long handled weeder but being off-season I could not find one. I found the Grandpa’s Weeder on the Internet and it looked like a better option than just the forked long handled dandelion weeder so I gave it a try. I was not disappointed, the Grandpa’s Weeder is well constructed and very simple to use — all the directions are on the handle. The hardest part of using the tool is to make sure you place it over the center of the root, which requires a little practice until you figure out where the roots of various types of weeds grow. It pulls the weeds up by the roots but leaves a small divot in the lawn, which you don’t even see after a day or two. It seems to works best when the ground is slightly moist. It works well to pull small to medium sized weeds, I’m not sure how it would work on very large weeds or small trees. It certainly saved my knee and back from a lot of pain and suffering. I’m thinking of buying one for each of my three kids.
You won’t go wrong buying this tool — good quality and simple design.

Flexrake 1000L Hula-Ho Weeder Cultivator with 54-Inch Wood Handle

Once, one of the most exhausting and back breaking gardening projects was to prepare or maintain the soil in an effort to establish a beautiful garden. That all changed when the Hula-Ho was first introduced in 1961. Inch The weeder with the wiggle-Inch forever changed the way gardeners weed, aerate, mulch and cultivate their gardens. Quite simply, the heat treated, self-sharpening Hula-Ho blade works beneath the surface of the soil. The almost effortless back and forth “hula” motion cuts weeds at the roots. Meanwhile, the weeds and soil blend to create a healthy mulch. This Hula-Ho garden weeder and cultivator features a 54-Inch premium grade hardwood handle. Made in the USA.

Weeders – Reviews
I thought I was ordering another tool very similar to the cobrahead. When I got this one, it works so much better than the one I wanted. It slices down to the roots of the weeds and tough grasses, making the job so much easier. I have several large flowerbeds, that had gotten quite out of hand while I was sick this summer. I got them all cleaned out in one weekend. I just might be ordering more as gifts for my friends for Christmas! It is a very sturdy, solid tool. Well made and should last a long time! The handle is very comfortable to use. I’m 70 years old so I need all the help I can get!

The CobraHead delivers all that is promised and more. It is great for scalping small areas in flower beds and then digging out weed roots. Excellent edging tool. Solid construction and comfortable hand grip.
Mary L. Greene
Versatile, durable, comfortable, the CobraHead is the first tool I pick up when I head out to the garden. I do everything with this: cultivate, mix compost, hack through hard-pan, transplant. etc.. Used mine in California clay-type soils going on three years now. The blade is quite worn, but the tool is still solid. Large diameter handle feels good in the hand and reduces grip fatigue. This is not a cheap import that will last but one season. I can’t comment how it will perform in rocky soils, but in clay it rips.

I have a 4,000 sq. ft. garden and use the Wolf Garten Weeder to manage the weeds around the plants and places I can’t access with my tiller. Coupled with the 59″ handle it is very light and easy to use. I turn it up on end and can “flick” the weeds away from my corn without having to bend over.
